For a woman kiss is a way to check if the relationship is more than just a fling, while men are less scrupulous when it comes to the question of kissing or just skipping it for sex.
According to the latest survey conducted by New York State University team, men and women think differently about kissing and place different meanings in it.
More than 1,000 students took part in a survey to reveal the importance of kissing to men and women. Besides the fact that women considered a kiss to be more important than men, they also judge about the potential of the relationship when kissing. Men often claimed to kiss just to increase chances of having sex.
In long-term relationships, the significance of kissing remained high for women but subsided for men.
Men said that sex without kissing is acceptable to them as well as sex with a person they are not attracted to. It also didn't matter much to them whether a partner is a bad or good kisser.
Throughout history kiss was a way to get closer and served as a bonding element for a couple in a courtship phase. The differences men and woman place on kissing is explained by their different biological goals. Dr Glenn Wilson says: "Men can just go out and spread their seed, but women have to take more responsibility because of the consequences and so they are likely to want to test more."
