Scientists from the B.C Institute of Technology are now developing eight especial vibrators for both men and women paraplegics, quadriplegics and others suffering from spinal cord injures.
The researches say that new sex toys are going to help the disabled first of all to satisfy their need for sex and secondly to provide sooner regeneration of their spinal cords. The new vibrators for paraplegics and quadriplegics are going to be tested next month.
The developers of the new vibrators say that people suffering from spinal cord injures do need sexual satisfaction and as well they need their problems to be recognized as existing and important.
Unfortunately this problem is rarely taken into account when trying to solve problems of the disabled.
A 2004 survey which involved 681 people suffering from spinal cord injures from the United States shows that most paraplegics consider regeneration of their sexual function to be the most important thing about their recovering.
Astonishingly enough they consider regaining their ability to have sex to be even more important than improvement of their bladder or bowl function.
Do the disabled really need vibrators?
According to director of the B.C Centre for Sexual Medicine Stacy Elliott, the disabled suffering from spinal cord injures do need a powerful vibrator for experiencing sexual arousal and achieving orgasm.
The fact is that due to their disease, paraplegics and quadriplegics are not quite sensitive to physical touch. They do need intensive stimulation of their erogenous zones which can be provided only with such a powerful device as a vibrator.
Necessary intensity of stimulation the disabled with spinal cord injury need cannot be provided by a regular human, so a vibrator is the only thing that can help the disabled to satisfy their need for sex - Stacy Elliott says.
The device developed by researches from the B.C. Institute of Technology resemble of vibrators researches from Elliot's clinic used for improving disabled men's infertility.
The question is -
Why do the disabled cannot use usual vibrators sold in sex shops?
The fact is that a spinal cord injury often brings about some changes in sensitivity of nerve endings. This implies that signals coming from the brain do not reach the body, i.e a disabled person does not feel anything as his or her sensations are very week.
Vibrators designed for healthy people are not powerful enough to arouse a person with spinal cord injury. Paraplegics and quadriplegics do need vibrators which might seem enormously intrusive to others, who do not have any problems with their spinal cord.
As well traditional vibrators, even the best ones do not suit the disabled because of their weight and some other properties.
A vibrator designed for a person with spinal cord injury should be light enough and comfortable to hold, as most of the disabled do not have quite a good control over their hand movement.
Another thing that does not allow the disabled to use usual vibrators is that these sex toys might heat up. A healthy person will immediately feel the heat, whereas a disabled having bad sensation is not likely to feel it in time
So the main goal of the developers was to create a user friendly and comfortable to use vibrator.
More People to Enjoy Sex
The new vibrator is going to be considerably different from other sex toys of this kind offered to customers in online and offline sex shops. The vibrator's design is based on suggestions given by a focus group consisting of the disabled with spinal cord injures.
Many important things were taken into account while developing the new vibrator: how the sex toy is hold, its manipulation, control, functioning and other things of this kind.
According to Dave Hinton, who is executive director of CPA (Canadian Paraplegic Association) circa 40 000 Americans suffer from a spinal cord injury of this or than degree of severity.
With these figures the new vibrator seems to be of an enormous importance. More and more people in the world are going to have better and more enjoyable sex lives!
