A hormonal patch that was developed to boost women's sex drives will soon be available at the market.
Intrinsa, the patch by maker Procter and Gamble will be prescribed as a part of the treatment for those women who had to face early menopause due to the hysterectomy surgery.
About one million women in UK undergo hysterectomy, when their ovaries were removed during the surgery for such condition as pelvic pain or bleeding.
The removal of ovaries leads to a number of side effects including low sex drive. That is mainly due to the decreasing level of testosterone hormone that regulates sexual desire.
Intrinsa patch releases low doses of testosterone and is worn on the abdomen.
After numerous trials on more than 500 women, the patch proved to be quite effective in increasing sex drive. Women who took part in trials claimed about 74 percent more satisfaction in their intimate life.
Although the patch is not the same as Viagra and does not provide a quick solution, but rather is a part of therapy.
Low sex drive is a complex issue, where one cannot treat it with drug alone. In spite of the fact that Intrinsa offers a good medical help for women with early menopause and many of them report about increase in sexual desire, there can be a variety of other reasons that lead to low libido.
Dr Nick Panay, of the Daisy Network, a support group for women with premature menopause, said that many women after surgery suffer from psychological problems and experience distress which should be addressed appropriately to solve this complex problem.
